Dear Congregant,

Welcome to Shabbat Across CBO! We are hoping to have a wonderful Friday night on March 9, 2018 on which congregants will invite other congregants to their homes for Shabbat dinner.  In addition, there will also be an option to begin your night with Kabbalat Shabbat Service at Rabbi Bernstein’s house (approximately 45 minutes).  This is part of an overall plan to continue to develop community and to develop a culture of Friday night Shabbat dinners in people’s homes, but we are starting small with one designated Shabbat.

This can be as formal or informal as you want, with as much help or as little help from us as you want. We are developing a set of guidelines and will have a full packet of materials for those who volunteer to host. If you host, feel free to cook or bring in kosher meat, or fish (no shellfish), or dairy. We are trying to strike a balance between your personal custom and also trying to maintain a level of kashrut (keeping kosher) that honors our commitment to Jewish dietary laws. Your house does not have to be kosher and you can use your own dishes or plastic/paper if you prefer, but we do ask you to serve Kosher food.

Some of you are used to formal Shabbat dinners that you have now or remember. Some of you do pizza and will shy away from more formal choices, so feel free to go with pizza if that is your comfort level.

Some of you will only feel at home if you invite friends. Others will be willing to venture out to inviting congregants from the other section of the newly merged synagogue, and we would encourage that.

Some of you can only accommodate two more people and others can do ten. We would encourage you to have a group that ranges from four to twelve, at your own comfort level.

We are asking for volunteers to host and we are asking for people who would like to attend at someone else’s house. We are asking hosts to give us a list of those who are coming to your home and an indication whether you have space for others and if so how many.

Below is a form that we would like you to return to the temple so that we may begin the process of setting this up. We hope you are as excited about this as we are.

B’Shalom

Rabbi Bernstein and Sherry Skolnik, Chair of Shabbat Across CBO.
