Congregation Beth Ohr Scholarship Information

Dear Congregant:

With pleasure we inform you that the following scholarships are available to deserving members or children of our synagogue members whose families are in good financial standing. A student may apply for any or all awards for which he/she is eligible. All awards require an application and essay. The same essay may be used for the Gesher, Goffin, and Goldstein scholarships, or different essays may be written; the Bloomstone essay is briefer, with different parameters. The successful applicant for the first three awards will be able to describe in detail actual activities which demonstrate his or her Jewish commitment.

Gesher Scholarship: Any graduating high school senior who has been accepted to a college or technical training school is eligible for this award. The focus is on making a place for the synagogue in one’s life. Award has been $1000 to one student or $500 if split between two students.

Ida Goffin Education Award: This is awarded by an outside agency that provides the specification. Eligibility is a “student” of any age who has a genuine love and appreciation of Judaism and actively participates in religious services and Jewish functions. Money must be used for a Jewish program, not school tuition. The applicant must explain what the money is being used for. The scholarship committee will recommend a choice to the Goffin family but they have final say. Award has been $500.

Harriet Goldstein Scholarship: Any student up to and including the age of 18 is eligible. The award is to be used to further the student’s knowledge, background, or interest in Jewish life. Maximum award is $500.

Bloomstone Encampment Fund: Any student planning to go to Kadima or USY Encampment is eligible. The purpose of the award is to encourage the pursuit of Jewish learning through attendance at Kadima or USY end of summer encampment. Past award has been $50 to any student who goes to Encampment.

The application is available in hard copy in the synagogue office or online on ShulCloud. Application and Essay should be submitted either in hard copy in the temple office to Julie Feinman, Executive Director or by email to exec.director@cbohr.org or Julie.feinman@cborh.org postmarked, date-stamped upon receipt in the office, or emailed by April 24, 2017. Applicants will be notified by June 19, 2017. Temple address is Congregation Beth Ohr, 2550 South Centre Avenue, Bellmore, NY 11710.
