Dear Fabulous Parents,
We are very excited to have a joint Chanukah Festival on Sunday, December 2, 2018 with Temple Israel of South Merrick. All classes will meet at Congregation Beth Ohr at 9:50 AM and form a caravan from our parking lot, going North on Centre Avenue to Merrick Road, turning left and continuing to Temple Israel of South Merrick. We will arrive at TISM at 10:30 AM when attendance will be taken. The Nassau County Police will be escorting us. If you are unable to join the caravan, please meet us at Temple Israel by 10:30 AM.
There will be no classes at Congregation Beth Ohr on that day.
Since all of our students will be singing in the Chorus, please make sure that they are wearing a white shirt and a dark bottom.
One important aspect of this experience is that that we will be building a Menorah made from cans of food which will be given to our food pantry for distribution. Our goal is to collect 1,800 cans. The next very important aspect of our event is that our students will be performing some Chanukah favorites. This will be a day to remember and a wonderful Mitzvah. There will also be Carnival games with prizes, a Holiday Boutique, a photo booth and some scrumptious Chanukah treats.
We are in need of more volunteers for this event. To those who have already volunteered, Todah Rabah.
Our Annual Menorah lighting ceremony will take place at the Bellmore LIRR station on Wednesday, December 5, 2018. Our fantastic choir will be performing. They alone are reason enough for all to attend. For those students attending the ceremony the dismissal time will be 5:45 PM. Parents must come to the Hebrew School office to sign out their children. If your child is not attending the ceremony, s/he will be dismissed at the regular time. We hope and encourage everyone to attend. I want to extend a special Todah Rabah to Cantor Kowitz and Mr. Bruce for their guidance and leadership in preparing our choir for this and other events.

CLASS PARENTS: Thank you to all of our Class Parent volunteers. We appreciate the time you are willing to give to help the classes.
The Kindergarten and Primary Class: Started to learn about Chanukah, and making (SHHHHH) Chanukah gifts. Their next class meets on Sunday, December 2, 2018 for our Chanukah Festival.
Save the Date: Our Kindergarten and Primary Class Shabbat is on Friday, January 25, 2019. More information will follow.
The Pre-Aleph Class: I was very impressed about the questions asked about Chanukah. For example, one student asked "Why does gelt have to be chocolate?" Their next class meets on Sunday, December 2, 2018 at Temple Israel for our Chanukah Festival.
Aleph: Both Aleph classes are excited about learning to read Hebrew. They have both started the unit on Chanukah and will be bringing home art projects and singing songs which are related to Chanukah.
Bet: The students are starting to learn the vocabulary needed for making the sufganiyot (jelly donuts) for Chanukah. They will be making them on December 2, 2018 at Temple Israel. Mr. Arkin could use several more parent volunteers in the "Arkin Kosher Bakery."
Gimel: The students are really excited working with our Shinshin, Yoav, and enjoy asking him questions about his life in Israel. The Gimel students are focusing on their Hebrew reading and are doing well.
They will be comparing Chanukah as celebrated here in Bellmore with the way it is celebrated in Israel.
Dalet: The Dalet students have been very diligent in learning the Shabbat Service. They are also focusing on the important role that Judaism has in their lives. The current "hot topic" in their class has been Chanukah.
Hey: A reminder: Hebrew High classes meet on Tuesdays from 7:00 PM until 8:40 PM at the Merrick Jewish Centre.
CALLING ALL HEY STUDENTS: We need your help, enthusiasm, and assistance this Sunday, December 2, 2018, at Temple Israel of South Merrick at 10:00 AM to run booths, distribute prizes, help with art projects and many other exciting tasks at our Chanukah Festival. I know that I can count on all of our Hey students.
The Hey students are begining to learn concepts of Talmud and how the Rabbis discuss and interpret it.
The Hey students have been working very hard learning the prayers for their Bar / Bat Mitzvah. I encourage you to attend Shabbat services in the Main Sanctuary to improve your comfort level for your child's Bar or Bat Mitzvah and to strengthen your child's Hebrew reading.
I hope that you have all received the Hebrew School Calendar. If you have any questions or concerns about it, please contact June at SchoolAdm@cbohr.org. Please keep your eye on the Calendar, as we update it regularly.
Our three Junior Congregation dates in December are Saturday, December 1, Saturday, December 8, and Saturday, December 15, 2018. It starts at 10:30 AM in the Muraskin Room. We hope that everyone will attend.
HEY STUDENTS: Please make sure that you let the Junior Congregation Leader know that you are attending services in the Main Sanctuary so that you may receive credit for having attended Shabbat services.
For any student who has attended a service here at Congregation Beth Ohr and there is no scheduled Junior Congregation service, please email June (SchoolAdm@cbohr.org) with the date.
On Sunday, December 9, 2018 our choir will appear at The Bristal House from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM to entertain the seniors in residence. The address of The Bristal House is 40 Merrick Avenue, East Meadow, NY 11554. This Mitzvah is appreciated by our elderly friends who truly look forward to interacting with our students. Parents and students are asked to be there by 10:00 AM. The performance will run until about 11:00 AM. Attendance will be taken at the Bristal House. We invite and encourage all parents to stay to enjoy the show. Please wear a white shirt and dark bottom.
There are no regular Hebrew School hours for those classes on that date. The Kindergarten, Primary and Pre-Aleph classes will meet at CBO at their regular time.
The next Board of Education meeting will be held Monday, December 17, 2018 at 8:00 PM in the Muraskin Room.
On behalf of my dedicated professional staff and myself, I would like to wish all our families a very “Miraculous” and EnLIGHTening Chanukah.
As always, my door is open to embrace all your suggestions, concerns and ideas.
Shabbat Shalom and Chag Sameach.
