This Shabbat we say goodbye to our mother, Sarah. Ironically, Sarah dies in this portion which is named, Chayei Sarah (the life of Sarah). Sarah is an important figure for the Jewish people. She is revered as our first matriarch. She is buried along with Abraham in the Cave of Machpelah. People visit her grave...Read more...

10/30 Shabbat Blast: Jewish Halloweeen

Jewish institutions deal with Halloween in different ways. Some ignore it, hoping that if they close their eyes and clap their hands children will like Hebrew homework more than eating candy. I don't see this happening any time soon. Others embrace it and coin cute little names like Challahween when the ghoulish holiday coincides with Shabbat. Many cringe at this notion, including me, but there is something to be said for meeting people,...Read more...

This Shabbat we put Bellmore and Merrick on the Jewish map. Our team of rabbis in the area, in partnership with the Merrick Bellmore Jewish Community Council (MBJCC) has worked together to create a variety of meaningful moments of connection. Jewish communities all over the world are plugging into this idea, from Barcelona to New Zealand and of course Bellmore and Merrick. Click here to see this international project. Our parsha, Noah, is centered around the Ark that will ensure the survival of the human race and the various animal life on earth. There are mefarshim, commentators, who explain that the word ‘תיבה’ (teivah) means both ‘ark’ and ‘word’. In essence, humankind, owes its existence to words, just as it did when God said, “Let there be…” and there was light, water, the celestial bodies, and all living creatures. We...Read more...

It’s hard to believe, but the chagim, the Jewish  holidays, have finally finished their season. Routines are getting back to normal and everything we put off until after the holidays is coming rushing in. Let’s hit the ground running!

I just came from a beautiful morning at Solomon Schechter of Nassau County where I joined 5-11 year old Jewish children in Kabbalat Shabbat. Their voices and excitement over...Read more...

6/12 Shabbat Blast: Healing and Hope

I spoke to Cantor Yavneh today and he sounded like his normal self. Over the last few months, he has been juggling treatments for ongoing health issues along with the teaching of our students and his work during the week. He had planned to take time during the summer to address his health, but as they say in Yiddush, “Der Mench trackht, un...Read more...

The world looks on with anguish as  Saturday’s Earthquake in Nepal  left more than 3,700 dead and untold devastation in its wake.  As this is still a rescue and recovery operation, we remain hopeful that more people will be found alive.

In our double torah portion, Acharei Mot/ Kedoshim, God says to all  the people of Israel: “Be Holy for I am holy.” To be Kadosh...Read more...
