This Pandemic has tested us in many ways. It has tested our creativity, our patience, our resilience and our hope. Last week’s Torah portion was Ki Tetsei, “When you go out,” and this week’s is Ki Tavo, "When you come in." They encompass these directions of life, our leaving and our returning, each with a different mindset. Ecclesiastes might say, there is a time to come inside and a time to go out into the world.
These times may not coincide with our desires, our goals, and our expectations, or our plans. We often push so hard for this time to be something other than what it is. Perhaps these two portions back to back encourage us to sit with the situation in front of us, rather than struggling with the time we are in. The word that comes to mind is "acceptance." Many think that acceptance is "giving up." Perhaps there is another way of thinking about this. It is a pragmatic, realistic, and creative way of meeting our current context.
There is no past or future, only the present moment. We can try to twist and turn it, but when we view it with open eyes, we can become its master and perhaps even find creative and fulfilling moments.
