From Rabbi Dahlia Bernstein Friday, October 16, 2020
Dear CBO Family,
There is something comforting about starting the Torah over again, as if the upheavals of 2020 can't stop everything. The Torah reading cycle continues and we return to the beginning of the story.
Every time we read a verse of Torah, it is as if our "prescription" has changed. The events of the last year have certainly changed the lenses through which we view the world. This is true of every year, but perhaps the changes are more noticeable. We have learned about our relationship to family, what items we can go without and what is important to us.
Perhaps this year, the story of a man whose flood destroyed the world may resonate with our experience of upheaval, or the idea that two brothers sharing the same womb, so close, but so different, may highlight thoughts of confinement and bring wisdom to our humanness in wanting to be loved, and experiencing conflict.
Bereishit gives us a blank slate to understand our current situation through the process of Torah study. I can't wait to walk this path with you.
Shabbat Shalom, Rabbi Bernstein
