Every Friday night, parent's bless their children with the words of our Torah portion:
May God bless you and watch over you. May God shine His face upon you and be gracious to you. May God lift His face toward you and give you peace.
It is a moment when every child can expect to feel their parent's love. The week may be hectic, and people have short attention spans, but once a week children can rely on that feeling that they are not alone in this world. It's a feeling so important that we took the word of the Priestly benediction and set it to share with our family. This sense that we are not alone, whether it is between parents and children, two loving parents, teachers and students, or even neighbors is essential.
Today, as we think about who needs to know that they are not alone, I think of my cousins in Be'er Sheva, my good friends in Jerusalem, and my old camp buddies up north. I want them to know that they are not alone. That my love extends to them and I wish them blessings and God's protection.
As we wait to see what the ceasefire between Hamas and Israel brings, let us make sure that our friends and family in Israel know that they have people in the world who care about their well-being.
May God grant us all peace.
Shabbat shalom, Rabbi Bernstein
