This Saturday night is the Holiday of Tisha B’ Av (The 9th day of the Hebrew month of Av) which goes until Sunday evening at sundown. It is a fast day and one of the saddest days in the history of our people as we grieve about the destruction about the first and second Temples in Jerusalem. The Shabbat right before Tisha B’av is known as Shabbat Chazon, also known as the Shabbat of Vision. The name of Chazon comes from the opening of the Haftarah that is read this week (Isaiah 1:1-27) and opens by, “The vision of Isaiah son of Amotz who prophesied about Judah and Jerusalem…
There is a story by the great Chassidic Rabbi Levi Yitzchak of Berdichev, “A father once prepared a beautiful suit of clothes for his son. But the child neglected his father’s gift, and soon the suit was in tatters. The father gave the child a second suit of clothes; this one, too, was ruined by the child’s carelessness. So, the father made a third suit. This time, however, he withholds it from his son. Every once in a while, on special and opportune times, he shows the suit to the child, explaining that when the child learns to appreciate and properly care for the gift, it will be given to him. This induces the child to improve his behavior, until it gradually becomes second nature to him—at which time he will be worthy of his father’s gift.”
On this “Shabbat of Vision,” Rabbi Levi Yitzchak, also teaches us that we all have the opportunity to witness a third Temple. This third Temple could be a lot of different things to different people. I ask you on this Shabbat Chazon to think about what it is you would want to see in a third temple? People praying together irrespective of denomination? Jews helping other Jews without Judgment or reproach? Ahavat Chinam, Baseless love for one another? Let this Shabbat be a doorway and one of a vision of a brighter future with love not hatred or judgment for all us.
Shabbat Shalom, Cantor Diamond
