From Rabbi Dahlia Bernstein Friday, October 15, 2021
Dear CBO family,
Lech Lecha is a portion that contains endless wisdom. We meet Avram, the gritty and thoughtful man of faith. He is willing to go on a journey that is undefined because he has a calling, a nondescript vision of movement, creation, and connection with something that is bigger than himself. Avram is the progenitor of 3 great religions and he had no idea that his world would flourish into who we are today. I’d like to be a fly on the wall in a therapy session with Avram to see how he felt about his next steps. Was he eager? Skeptical? Unclear? Did he feel guilty for dragging Sarah along with him or feel burdened by the fact that he was responsible for so many people who were joining him?
If Avram could see us today, would he be able to see the fruits of his labor? We look at leaders in the Torah and assume perfection, certainty, and clarity about their states of mind and purpose. What is so beautiful about the Lech Lecha story is how ill-defined Avram’s movement is, full of potential, likely fear, as well as fortitude.
May we be like Avram and be willing to put one foot in front of the other, allowing the pavement to hit our feet as we create our own path. May you be strengthened in your journey.
