There are truly no words to describe the kind of horrors we have seen this week and in previous weeks in Buffalo. With 19 children and 2 teachers killed in the shooting of an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, we know that the world is not right. Our children are most precious to us and the world is on loan to us from them. As if this was not upsetting enough, we also have this sick feeling that we are seeing this on repeat, from Sandy Hook and Parkland.
The human instinct reading the news is to send prayers of compassion and comfort to the victims and families of Uvalde, Texas, yet we all know there is more to be done and we must rise above our differences to save lives.
We reach for tradition to steady us when the world makes no sense, not because it has all the answers, but because it steadied our grandparents and great grandparents with countless generations before them. And each generation relied on the values of Judaism to make change and reach for a better world.
Each generation has incorporated the following teaching into how they strove for change: “'Do not stand idly by the blood of your neighbor' (Leviticus 19:16). Let’s pray for wisdom and fortitude for our leaders and let us raise up our voices for reform in our legislation so that we can make the world a safer place for all, but especially for our children.
You are welcome to join us for a prayer for the victims on Shabbat morning. May Shabbat give you a chance to connect with your loved ones and comfort one another.
