Shabbat Blast; 4/1 Something Here Doesn't Seem Kosher!

Dear [first_name],

“Kosher” is now used as an adjective in regular secular conversations and even on TV. How many times do I hear, “Something here doesn’t seem kosher” and think to myself how funny it is that such an ancient Jewish discipline has become colloquial. The second half of Parashat Shemini (11:1-47) introduces the topic of kashrut, the Torah's dietary laws. It outlines the various species of animals deemed permissible or forbidden for consumption.

Commentators and Jewish thinkers have tried to make sense of the laws, giving them concrete reasons why one animal is kosher while another is not. Rambam tries to say that non-Kosher animals are less wholesome in nutrition. They are not as good for the body.  Please remind me of that the next time I eat Kishke.

This Shabbat we will delve into the changing dynamic within keeping Kosher. How do we relate? How do we think about our own practice? Has it changed since we were kids in Bubbe’s house? In our living and breathing practice, let us be mindful about what we eat and how it contributes to our spiritual lives. Join us to explore more tomorrow morning.

Shabbat shalom,

Rabbi Bernstein
