Shabbat Blast 8/5/16: Rosh Hodesh Av

08/05/2016 02:31:12 PM

Aug5

Hodesh tov! Today is Rosh Hodesh Av, and we are simultaneously celebrating the start of the month of Av, while transitioning into days of mourning culminating in the fast day of Tish’a B’av, immediately following next Shabbat.

We have chosen tonight to magnify the celebratory aspect of both Rosh Hodesh and Shabbat, but there will also be subdued moments in tonight’s service, for example, we’ll start to chant a melody that has been sung by generation after generation at this time of year.

The melody comes from Eli Tsiyon, a piyut (liturgical poem) crafted by an unknown author, and set to music by an unknown composer, at some distant time in our history. Sometimes we can guess the text’s author by poetic clues, such as Lekha Dodi’s author working his name into the verses. In Eli Tsiyon, we have an acrostic poem of 11 verses, where the letters of the alphabet appear from alef to taf, at the start of the second word of each line. I’ve only recorded two verses here, and I picked two that mentioned singing and dancing (you’ll understand why if you look at the rest of the verses).

CLICK HERE to listen to Eli Tsiyon
Recorded and arranged by Cantor Sarah Myerson (voice and accordion)

Refrain:
Mourn Zion and her cities, like a woman in her labor,
And like an unmarried woman wrapped in sack-cloth for the husband of her youth

Verse 2:
For the exile of the servants of God, who sing her songs,
And for their blood that was spilled like the waters of her rivers.

Verse 3:
For the chatter of her dancers which was silenced in her cities,
and for the committee that destroyed and annulled her Sanhedrin.

Believe it or not, Eli Tsiyon is generally thought of as a hopeful conclusion to the section of kinot (mournful liturgical poems) chanted on Tish’a B’av, because the woman in labor referred to in the chorus reminds us to pray for the Messianic Age, when God will deliver us from our troubled present into the World to Come.

Cantors like to incorporate this melody into our services as we approach Tish’a B’av, to mark these days of transition and mourning. We’ll chant the melody as a nigun tonight, and we’ll also use this melody to chant Mi Khamokha— Who is like you, God? Our Hope, our Deliverance, our Redemption.

Wishing you a Shabbat Shalom and a Hodesh Tov,

Cantor Myerson
