Dear [first_name],

More of our liturgy comes from this week’s Torah portion, Va’ethanan, than from any other parashah. We’ll start tomorrow’s Shabbat reading, for example, with the Shema and Ve’Ahavta:

CLICK HERE to listen to Shema-Ve’Ahavta
Arranged and recorded by Cantor Sarah Myerson (voice) and Ilya Shneyveys (accordion)

Listen, Jewish people!
I’m about to reveal to you our creed, our statement of faith.

Adonai is our God, Adonai is One.
There is only One God, and our name for God is Adonai.

You shall love Adonai your God,
Loving your parent, your spouse, your child; that comes naturally. Loving your God, whom you also fear, that requires a commandment.

With all your heart, with all your soul, with all your might.
Love is expressed through emotion, through ideas, through action.

Take these words, that I command you this day, to your heart.
These words! The verses you just heard.

Teach them to your children,
That our tradition may pass from one generation to the next.

Speak of them; when you are at home, and going on your way, in your lying down, and in your getting up.
Wherever you are, whenever you need guidance, let these words be in your ears, and on your lips.

Bind them as a sign upon your hand,
Let these words guide everything you do.

Let them be a symbol before your eyes,
Informing the way you look at the world.

Write them on the doorposts of your home, and on your gates,
As a reminder that I am with you everywhere.

As you may have guessed from listening to the recording (above), my husband-to-be Ilya Shneyveys is here visiting, and he graciously joined me in our studio to record this song. Our arrangement is based on Torah cantillation for Deuteronomy 6:4-9, Cantor Leib Glantz’s recitative Shema Yisrael, and the Shema melody attributed to Cantor Solomon Sulzer. Please join us tonight at 6:30 pm for Shabbat on the Grass, a special musical service on the grass just outside Congregation Beth Ohr’s sanctuary. Ilya and I will both play musical instruments to add to the festivity of the evening, and we look forward to seeing you tonight.

Shabbat Shalom,

Cantor Myerson

Join us Friday night August 19 at 6:30pm for Shabbat on the Grass, a special musical Shabbat on the grass just outside our sanctuary, with guest musician Ilya Shneyveys (Cantor Myerson's husband-to-be).  We will be enjoying the warmth of the summer outside and allowing the rhythm of the tefillah and the music to connect us to each other, to community and our own neshamot, our souls. You're welcome to bring your own lawn chairs. Please note that there will be no 8:00 pm service this evening.

Ian Randman has an Eagle Scout Project in memory of Shawn Asman, whose mom is a current member of CBO. Here is his note:  “Hi, I have created the crowdfunding campaign. The project is being done in memory of Shawn Asman, a student that attended Calhoun High School but passed away in December of 2014. All other information regarding the project is included in the campaign: Ian's Eagle Scout Project at Calhoun High School. Thank You, Ian”

The Hazak Chapter of CBO invites the community to a very special program: Financial Exploitation of Older Adults: A Free Training/Learning Opportunity.  This workshop, taught by our CBO member Raquel Malina Romanick, Staff Attorney of the Brookdale Center for Healthy Aging at Hunter College, and Gary Brown, the New York State Attorney General's Statewide Elder Abuse Coordinator, will provide training on identification (signs and symptoms), intervention (where to turn when abuse is suspected) and prevention strategies to reduce the prevalence of elder mistreatment in New York State. Wed. Aug. 24, 1:30 PM at Cong. Beth Ohr.  This program is free and open to the entire community. Pre-registration is necessary.  Call Bill at 221-2056.
