Erev Shabbat – October 7, 2016 Candle Lighting: 6:07 pm Maariv: 8:00 Shabbat, October 8, 2016 Parshat Vayeilech THERE IS NO NOSH AND D’RASH THIS WEEK!!! Services 9:30 am Minyan Requests for this week: Steven Singer has Yahrzeit for his mother and requests a Minyan for Sunday Evening October 9 at CBO @ 8 pm and Monday Morning October 10 at 6:30 am. Steve Hyman has Yahrzeit for his mother and requests a Minyan for Thursday Evening October 13 at CBO @ 8 pm. Dear [first_name], CLICK HERE to listen to Avinu Malkeinu Recorded by Cantor Sarah Myerson (voice) and Ilya Shneyveys (accordion) Avinu Malkeinu, our Father, our King, inscribe us in the Book of Good Life. Avinu Malkeinu, our Mother, our Queen, inscribe us in the Book of Redemption and Salvation. Avinu Malkeinu, our Parent, our Sovereign, write us in the Book of Sustenance and Livelihood. Avinu Malkeinu, our Creator, our Provider, write us in the Book of Forgiveness and Pardon. Avinu Malkeinu, favor us and answer us, although our deeds are insufficient; treat us charitably and with loving kindness and deliver us. In my translation above, you’ll note I use different English words for the Hebrew words Avinu and Malkeinu. Avinu- this comes from the idea that we are all God’s children. Moses tells us so in Deuteronomy 14:1! Malkeinu- this is because we are God’s vassals. Look, for example, at Leviticus 25:42, where God tells us plainly that the reason God freed us from slavery in Egypt, was so that we could be free to serve God. We chant the Avinu Malkeinu passage every weekday from Rosh Hashanah to Yom Kippur, and four times over the course of Yom Kippur itself: the evening Kol Nidre service, the Shaharit morning service, the Minha afternoon service, and finally during the pre-evening N’ilah service. Why do we do this? Because just as a store must take inventory of its stock, so too must we each take inventory of our own personal stock. Against whom am I holding a grudge? Can I try to let go of that feeling? Would it help to have a conversation with my fellow, to try to reach a place of mutual forgiveness? That argument we had, should I go apologize for having lost my temper, or will it dredge up the conflict again? What work do I need to do towards reconciliation with the people in my life, and what work do I need to do towards reconciliation with God? As you listen to this week’s recording, I encourage you to take these 3 minutes and 34 seconds to find one personal relationship you can commit to trying to heal over the coming week, and one way in which you could work to deepen your relationship to the divine spark within you. Ge’mar Hatima Tovah, may we be blessed in the year to come, Shabbat Shalom, Cantor Myerson 2016-5777 High Holiday Schedule
