Dear [first_name],

This Shabbat we are embarking on Noah’s Ark, the story of Noah building a vessel to rescue his family and himself while the rest of the world is destroyed by a flood. Tomorrow, in my Shabbat sermon, I will talk about the Ark and how this works for us today as a metaphor for Israel and the rest of world Jewry. My remarks come in the aftermath of altercations at the Western Wall. Conservative and Reform rabbis protested the stalemate in the Israeli Government who committed to make an Egalitarian prayer space at the Western Wall. Conservative and Reform rabbis, along with Women of the Wall, led a march on the Kotel Plaza. The organizers succeeded in obtaining, for the first time ever, a special permit from police to bring their Torah scrolls to the Jewish holy site. A few people from the Ultra Orthodox community responded violently, pushing, and throwing some people to the ground.

I will speak more about this topic tomorrow, but for the moment that I will say that the state of the Jewish people leaves me unnerved and distraught. What has happened to us that we find ourselves pushing our own?  Please click here for a list of articles on the events of the past week and come tomorrow to hear more about this topic.

Shabbat shalom,

Rabbi Bernstein

The New And Improved Junior Congregation! Join us for our next great Junior Congregation tomorrow, 10AM in the Muraskin Room. There will be learning, there will be noshing.  Our talented Educators will be explaining the Saturday Morning Service, discuss the prayers in depth and how they pertain to each of us, and of course, bagels.  Parents are welcome (Encouraged) to come to the Sanctuary during this time.  Stay for a lovely kiddush with the entire congregation.  Click here for a printable flyer with the dates.

In honor of Veterans Day next week, we are going to have representatives from the Jewish War Veterans come to speak on Shabbat morning, Nov. 12th. We are sending a special invitation to Veterans to join us on Shabbat morning for services and lunch. David Zwerin, commander of the Jewish War Veterans will be speaking about his experiences as a Jew in the service and the state of War Veterans today. If it is not your usual custom to join us on Shabbat morning, please call the office and let us know you will be attending (516-781-3072).
