Dear Congregation Beth Ohr,

I always enjoy our Shabbat Kiddush conversations, and two weeks ago I received a request that for this week’s congregational email, I send out a recording of the song Al HaNisim.

Al HaNisim is the name of a special prayer that we recite on Hanukkah. Al HaNisim thanks God for “the miracles and the redemption, the heroic deeds and the salvation, and the wars You fought, for our ancestors, in those days, at this time.”

We add Al HaNisim into the Modim prayer of every amida during Hanukkah (and Purim); morning, afternoon and evening, and also into the Nodeh prayer of the Blessing After Meals (Birkat HaMazon) for every meal during Hanukkah (and Purim). Our Hebrew School students will proudly tell you that means we have the opportunity (if you eat three meals a day and pray three times a day) to recite Al HaNisim a total of 48 times during Hanukkah!

It’s appropriate to add Al HaNisim into these prayers, Modim and Nodeh, because both prayers focus on giving thanks to God. I invite you, as you listen to this recording, to think of some things for which you’re grateful this Hanukkah. May we all be blessed with light and love, happiness and peace. CLICK HERE to listen to Al HaNisim

Composed by Dov Frimer (text liturgical)

Recorded and arranged by Ilya Shneyveys (accordion) and Cantor Sarah Myerson (voice and clarinet)

Shabbat Shalom and Hag Urim Sameah,

Cantor Myerson

From Andrew Kessler: As part of my mitzvah project, I am collecting new unwrapped toys that will be donated to the Ronald McDonald House.
