Composer: Seth Chalmer

Lyrics: Hosea 2:21

Recorded by Cantor Sarah Myerson (voice)

This week's haftarah portion, from the second chapter of Hosea, features some unmitigatedly colorful (adult) language. Hosea relates God's relationship with Israel in explicit terms of adultery, idolatry and prostitution. There is more than one reason we always have B'nei Mitzvah recite their Haftarot in Hebrew rather than in English!

Right at the end of the haftarah, Hosea preaches that a day will come when Israel and God will restore the covenant, giving us the text of this week's song. This has become one of the verses we recite when wrapping tefillin around our fingers, and some Jewish couples recite these verses as part of their wedding vows under the huppah.

For this week's recording, I have adapted the opening section of a choral composition by Seth Chalmer (NY). Ve'eirastich Li/Anah Dodi was a featured composition in the 2010 Shalshelet Festival, which is how I learned it.

I just came back yesterday from the most fabulous Cantors Assembly Convention. It was amazing to pray and sing and learn with two hundred cantors for four days! Some highlights for me were: seeing one of my YouTube videos featured in a presentation Monday (an unexpected 84 seconds of fame, giving me a platform to share my love of teaching Torah chanting with my colleagues), leading morning minyan on Tuesday, performing in a concert Wednesday night, and deep relational and pastoral work throughout. I look forward to sharing new stories, insights and music over the coming weeks.

Wishing you a Shabbat Shalom,

Cantor Myerson
