MITZVAHS AND MAZELS On Saturday, June 10th we have two mitzvahs to celebrate! Please join us as we share in the baby naming of Audrey Brooke Billig, daughter of Stephanie and Justin Billig, and granddaughter of our members, Robin and Ira Faber. Our second happy event on the 10th, is our Hazak President Bill Berkowitz chanting the haftorah on the 70th anniversary of his Bar Mitzvah. Mazel Tov, also, to Ella Cetina, and the Cetina Family on the occasion of her Bat Mitzvah. She will be reading Torah and leading parts of the service. The Faber, Billig and Berkowitz families will be co-sponsoring the kiddush this Shabbat day in honor of these wonderful occasions. We hope you will all join us this Shabbat! Thank you to Iris Astrof for organizing yet another wonderful Israel Day Parade. Mazel Tov to Stanley Hochhauser for blowing the Shofar to kick off his 20th Parade! Wally Feith requests a Minyan, Monday evening, June 12 at 8PM and Tuesday morning, June 13 at 6:30AM. He has Yahrzeit for his parent. |
Dear Congregation Beth Ohr, Looking forward to a wonderful Shabbat! Our member Ella Cetina became Bat Mitzvah this week at Schechter School of Long Island, and her family will be joining us this Shabbat morning. Ella is even going to read her Torah aliyah again and help us lead parts of the service. Ira Faber will also honor us with his service leading in the name of her beautiful granddaughter, whom we are naming Shabbat morning. As if these weren't enough to celebrate, we also mark Bill Berkowitz's second Bar Mitzvah, with a much anticipated reprisal of Bill's Bar Mitzvah haftarah! I hope you can join us this Shabbat at Congregation Beth Ohr. The Torah portion this week is Beha'alotekha. Towards the end of the portion, there is a section of text marked in every Torah scroll with backwards letter nuns framing the beginning and end. Scholars think this might be a marking for early Temple worship. Indeed, the text itself is liturgical, telling us what Moses used to say when the Tabernacle was carried out and brought back: CLICK HERE to listen to Vahyi Binso'a (HHD) Recorded by Cantor Sarah Myerson and Ilya Shneyveys (vocals) When the Ark was to set out, Moses would say: "Advance, Adonai! May Your enemies be scattered, And when it halted, he would say: Of course, we chant these words every Saturday, Monday and Thursday as the beginning (verse 35) and end (verse36) of our Torah service. The melody best known in our community was written for Shabbat, by Salomon Sulzer, in the nineteenth century. But on Monday and Thursday mornings and on Shabbat afternoons, it is traditional to chant the Torah service using the same musical motifs as we use to chant Torah on the High Holy Days! Why am I explaining all of this? Because our Bat Mitzvah Ella Cetina has learned the weekday Torah service at Schechter, and she is leading parts of the Torah service with us this Shabbat. You can expect to hear her lead some melodies that sound more like weekdays than Shabbat morning. I hope that we can listen to her sweet voice and join in with her in song this Shabbat, especially since the words she will be chanting come directly from this week's Torah portion! Wishing you a Shabbat Shalom, Cantor Myerson |
