Dear [first_name], This Shabbat is the famous story of the meraglim, the “spies” who Moshe sends to scout out the Land of Israel. I would call them “scouts” before calling them “spies.” And the terminology makes a difference. I imagine 10 out of the 12 meraglim thought they were spies and 2, Joshua and Caleb, thought they were scouts. The difference comes from outlook on life. The spies go in expecting something monstrous or nefarious, something that would require spies. They were looking for a negative report and no matter what they saw, they had a colored view of what was in front of them. The truth is that Joshua and Caleb also had their own colored view. They likely saw themselves as scouts, those who went to gather intel, schematics, and information. And where others looked at the task ahead of them and acted like Chicken Little, Joshua and Caleb knew that by keeping their minds open, positive, and reasonable, you can mobilize a people even when there are challenges ahead. As leaders of families, as the captains of our own ships and that of our community, the message we put out can greatly change the way people respond and mobilize. Do we mobilize with fear or with courage and optimism? David Ben Gurion said: “In Israel, in order to be a realist you must believe in miracles." In the Jewish community a sense that the impossible is possible is necessary to move forward and to achieve great things. Shabbat shalom, Rabbi Bernstein |
