Dear Congregation Beth Ohr,
The first time I studied Parashat Korah was in preparation to become a Bat Mitzvah. I wrote a speech all about the importance of respecting authority and maintaining order (!). Korah of course is the leader of a band of Levites that seek to rebel against Moses in this week's Torah portion. You'll have to come to synagogue on Shabbat to hear exactly what happens, but we are led to believe that Korah and all of his descendants are crushed, never to be heard from again.
Yet, we know that some of Korah's descendants survived into Temple times! There is a different psalm assigned to each day of the week. Monday's selection is a psalm of the sons of Korah. So which is it? Were they obliterated? Or did they serve as Levites in the Temple? Or both?
A few years ago, I wrote a set of simple congregational melodies, one for each of the daily psalms. For Monday's psalm 48, I chose to set Verse 11:
The mountain of Zion will be glad, the daughters of Judah will rejoice, because of God's judgments.

There's a difference of opinion in translating the word b'not - it can mean daughters, or it can mean cities. I have chosen to translate the word b'not as daughters of Judah rather than cities of Judah.
I hope you enjoy listening to this recording as much as Ilya and I enjoyed putting it together for you.
Although it's only June, the High Holy Day choir has already started rehearsing for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. If you love singing, we would love to have you in the choir! Please contact me at cantor.myerson@cbohr.org and I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Shabbat Shalom, Cantor Sarah Myerson |
