Dear [first_name], It’s so exciting to enter my second year here with you! Imagine, it’s been not only an entire year in the secular (Gregorian) calendar, but we’ve also come around to Torah portions for which I’ve previously sent emails and music recordings. Last year, for this week’s Torah portion Balak, I sent this recording of Ma Tovu, the text of which comes from the gentile prophet Bilaam’s blessing of Israel. This year, I’m sending a setting of the last verse in the haftarah portion,
God has told you what is good, and what God requires of you: to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God. Composed and recorded by Cantor Sarah Myerson (voice and banjolele) Text from Micah 6:8
This verse from the prophet Micah is so famous that I was certain there must already exist numerous musical settings. When I looked online, I found lots of Christian songs based on the verse, but to be frank, I didn’t like any of them. I couldn’t believe there were no settings aimed towards Jewish audiences, no settings in Hebrew! Perhaps I just didn’t look in the right places. Anyway, I wrote my own, which I’ve attached above. I hope you enjoy listening and maybe by the end, you’ll be singing along!
Speaking of singing along, we hope to see you at our upcoming outdoor Shabbat experiences. Shabbat by the Sea was a huge success last week! While tonight we’ll be inside at our regular 8pm time, next week July 14 is Shabbat on the Grass at 6:30pm on, obviously, the grass outside the synagogue. Friday night August 4, we’ll celebrate Shabbat Under the Stars, complete with a BBQ at 6:30pm. Wishing you a Shabbat of justice tempered with mercy, divine inspiration couched by humility, and the loving embrace of family and friends,
Cantor Sarah Myerson
