Dear [first_name],

This week past, I had the honor to participate as a Fellow in the North American Jewish Choral Festival (NAJCF). The Festival takes place each July in Kerhonksen, at what used to be the Granite Hotel. It is, from what I understand, the only kosher catered venue left in the Catskills capable of hosting hundreds of attendees. While this was my first time at the NAJCF, I’ve been to the hotel before, for Klezkamp; a Yiddish cultural program (klezmer-camp!) that closed a few years ago.

All I did this past week was sing, listen and eat. It was intense! The mornings started with a choice of minyanim (Reform, Traditional Egalitarian, Orthodox) or yoga. I was privileged to lead minyan one morning, about which I'll write more below. During breakfast, lunch and dinner, the Fellows would eat as quickly as possible and then rehearse. We performed a variety of Jewish choral repertoire as part of a keynote lecture Wednesday, and somehow the only time to prepare for that was during meals.

After breakfast (and rehearsal) there was a Community Sing. Everyone sat in a tent outside and had the opportunity to learn music from several different conductors. As a choral conductor myself, it was great to see other conducting styles and to be able to learn from them. It is fascinating how much the sound of a choir can change, depending on who is conducting. There is something magical about how a leader’s gesture and body language really make a difference in what is produced by the ensemble.

Twice a day we had Instant Ensembles, where we were grouped by skill level into choirs that worked to prepare repertoire for the participant performance Thursday. I was in a choir with mostly other cantors, professional singers and conductors, and we learned several pieces of most difficult Jewish choral repertoire available. It’s been a few years since I had the opportunity to work in such a high level ensemble, and it was a lot of fun! After the Instant Ensemble rehearsals, the Fellows met with the conductor (Maestro Mati Lazar, the founder of the festival and director of the Zamir Choral Foundation) to go over pedagogy and other aspects of the rehearsal. The organizers put a lot of thought into the Fellowship; we also had opportunities to meet with other significant people in the scene, to speak with and learn from them.

There were workshops each day, where I took a much needed break from singing and learned from other conductors about their approaches to working with synagogue choirs. I hope to bring those skills and ideas back to work with our CBO choir towards the HHDs (and beyond?).

Every afternoon and evening, we were treated to concerts from a variety of Jewish choirs. There were local synagogue and community choirs as well as visitors from as far away as California. A big highlight was the four professional ensembles: the Zamir Chorale (New York and Boston chapters), the Shaar HaShomayim choir from Montreal, and the Maccabeats!

I wanted to record something at the Festival to share with you, which brings me to this week’s recording.

Field recording sample from the Traditional Egalitarian minyan at the 2018 North American Jewish Choral Festival (refu'ah shleima to whomever is coughing!)
Text: liturgical

Guardian of Israel, guard the remnant of Israel, and led not Israel be lost, who say, "Hear Israel."
Guardian of the unique nation, guard the remnant of the unique people, and let not the unique nation be lost, who proclaim the Oneness of You Name, "Adonai is our God, Adonai is One."
Guardian of the holy nation, guard the remnant of the holy people, and let not the holy nation be lost, who repeat the threefold sanctification to the Holy One.

I wrote a setting of Shomer Yisrael, a piyyut (liturgical poem) in our morning prayers. I handed out printed music during minyan, and the wonderfully talented minyanaires were able to sing the song from sight. Enjoy!

Hope to see you over Shabbat,

Shabbat Shalom,

Cantor Sarah Myerson
