Dear [first_name],
Later tonight we will come together as a community. We will beat our chests in a unified rhythm and list the ways we have communally sinned. The weeks leading up to these moments were fraught with personal confessions and apologies, but the tone shifts to the communal: “Ashamnu– we have trespassed; Bagadnu– we have dealt treacherously; Gazalnu– we have robbed; Dibarnu dofi– we have spoken slander; He’evinu–we have acted perversely; V’hirshanu– we have done wrong; Zadnu– we have acted presumptuously; Hamasnu– we have done violence; Tafalnu sheker– we have practiced deceit; Yaatsnu ra– we have counseled evil; Kizavnu– we have spoken falsehood; Latsnu– we have scoffed; Maradnu– we have revolted; Niatsnu– we have blasphemed; Sararnu– we have rebelled; Avinu– we have committed iniquity; Pashanu– we have transgressed; Tsararnu– we have oppressed; Kishinu oref– we have been stiff necked; Rashanu– we have acted wickedly; Shichatnu– we have dealt corruptly; Tiavnu– we have committed abomination; Tainu– we have gone astray; Titanu– we have led others astray.” But most individuals have not committed all of these actions, so why confess along with everyone else? There is a teaching in the Torah that if a person is found dead in the land between cities, the elders of those cities must each come to the site and proclaim: 'Our hands have not shed this blood nor have our eyes seen this act (Deut. 21:7,8). Rashi asks an amazing question saying: Is it possible to imagine that that the Elders of the court committed murder? Rather, 'We did not observe him and dismiss him, without food and without escort." In other words, the elders must proclaim that they didn’t turn anyone away, leading them to be hurt. They have to look at their community and ask, have we been generous enough? Have we embraced the stranger so that they didn’t have to go looking for shelter and comfort elsewhere? Have we worked hard to create a just community? When we confess as a community we must realize that we have a hand in creating a community, from the language we allow, to the bullying we tolerate (both of children and adults to other adults), to the kindness we extend, and the inclusiveity we embrace. Many communities claim to be welcoming, but few actually walk the walk. Did we live up to the reputation we are trying to create, or did we simply talk a good talk? I hope that when we stand there beating your chest, surrounded by other community members, Americans, and global citizens, each of us will ask ourselves how we allowed for deception, subjugation, and poverty, and we will ask ourselves what we can do to create the kind of synagogue, country, and world that we envision.
