We Wish You and Your Family a Healthy and Happy New Year!
From Cantor Joshua Kowitz
Dear Congregant,
This Weeks’s parsha, Parshat Shemot says, “A new king arose over Egypt who did not know Joseph.” (Chapter 1 verse 8) How is this possible? Joseph’s legacy was known all throughout Egypt being that he saved them from a famine. It truly isn’t possible for a Pharaoh not to know Joseph.
Later on in the Parsha we see that Pharaoh becomes afraid because he notices the Jewish people are becoming so numerous. This is the reason why Pharaoh decides to “not know Joseph”. He sees that the Israelites are becoming so numerous that they can overtake the Egyptians.
The result is that he makes them slaves so that they cannot start a revolution and overthrow the Egyptians. God sees that Pharaoh pretends not to know Joseph and hardens Pharaoh’s heart. God does this because by hardening Pharaoh’s heart his common sense is taken away.
This ultimately leads to his death when he purses the Israelites into the sea of reeds. The take away from this is that we must always remember where we came from and who we are as a people. We have a very rich heritage and tradition and we must do whatever possible to preserve it so that our ancestors who fought and died for us will have not done so in vain.
