The opening words of the Torah and our Parsha this week are “In the beginning God Created the Heaven and the Earth.” What does the Torah mean when it uses the word Bereshit? We know the translation of this word is beginning, but what exactly was beginning?
I believe it was the creation of Time. Literally the first precise moment, before this the concept of Time didn’t exist. The concept of Time is one that governs our world. We are either running late, or feeling like we are running out of time. Time is the centerpiece that drives human beings and without it our perception of the world would be altered so much so that we wouldn’t be able to exist properly.
Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi says the following about time, “Philosophers pose the question why did God create the world when God did? Why not a year, or a hundred million years earlier? Time itself is part of God’s creation. We cannot ask why the world was not created earlier, since there is no stretch of time that can be termed before creation.” By creating the concept of time God was able to create a whole universe that revolved around this concept. After creating Time everything that followed had an intimate relationship with it. Every living organism had a lifespan that was a certain time period long, the sun and the moon were present at certain times. Time truly governs all. This is why I believe one of the first mitzvot is Kiddush Ha-chodesh-in which time is made holy by setting months and seasons in the Jewish calendar.
As we begin to read the Torah over again, I ask that each of you to think about how you spend the time you have each day. How much of that time are you yelling at others or are feeling annoyed and upset?. How much of that time is spent with your loved ones and friends? We must make the most out of the time we have each day and look for the little moments that bring us Joy.
Wishing you a lovely Shabbat, Cantor Kowitz

Our Alix Rubinger Kosher Food Pantry needs Increased membership contributions as well as ideas for other sources of income. We are now serving 15 to 20 families per week and our funds are very low. While a lot of food is contributed to our pantry from supermarkets and other synagogues, it is still necessary to purchase needed food items.
Checks can be made out to the Alix Rubinger Kosher Food Pantry or made out to CBO with an indication that the funds go to the pantry account.
Please remember that this is OUR Pantry.
