Death, Dying & the Afterlife in Judaism - The Journey of the Soul

Join CBO Adult Education for a weekly class with Rabbi Rishe on Mondays at noon.
We will explore the Journey of the Soul, from Age-ing to Sage-ing, confronting mortality, grief, death, and dying in Judaism. We will learn about the afterlife, reincarnation and the Jewish mourning rituals from a logistical and spiritual perspective.
Please feel free to include your questions, what you are curious to learn about in your sign-up sheet to help shape the content of this class, which was requested by our congregants.
You are welcome to bring your own (kosher or vegetarian) lunch to eat during class.

In September, we will continue with High Holiday preparation and schedule a ritual for cemetery visits in the month of Elul.

What you will learn:
- Does Judaism believe in the afterlife?
- Why do we say Kaddish?
- What is the symbolism of tearing clothing or covering mirrors during Shiva?
- How do Jewish texts approach the challenges of getting older and confronting mortality?
- What are the ways we honor the dead in Judaism?
- What do Jewish and contemporary texts say about grief?
- Is there such thing as reincarnation in Judaism?
... and more!

How we Learn:
Our classes are a mixture of discussion, reading texts (all translated from Hebrew into English), and storytelling and teaching by the Rabbi. We sometimes engage in meditative niggun-singing or creative projects, and every class ends with a journal prompt.

Who is this for:
This class is open to all members of CBO, of all ages and with all backgrounds. No Jewish prior knowledge or Hebrew reading is required. Non-members are also welcome for a course rate of $72.

If you would like to make an additonal donation to help offset the cost, it would be greatly appreciated.
