We have the pleasure this week to welcome in Shabbat HaChodesh, where we are bringing in not just any month. We are bringing in THE MONTH-Hachodesh, Chodesh Nisan (The month of Nisan) harboring the Pesach that is coming, Z’man Chayrutaynu-the time of our freedom. This Shabbat gets its name from the Maftir Torah reading “Which details the Passover sacrifice, with your loins girded, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand; eating bitter herbs and unleavened bread; and putting blood on the doorposts; and it lists the Passover laws.” (MyJewishlearning.com)
As we are coming into this new Chodesh of Nisan we have the opportunity to start the New Year again. We often think of Rosh Hashanah as the beginning of the New Year; contrary to popular belief the Hebrew month that Rosh Hashanah occurs in is Tishrei, the seventh month of the Hebrew calendar. The first month in the Hebrew calendar is Nisan. So why do we celebrate multiple New Year’s over the course of the Hebrew Calendar?
Consider this, the Gregorian calendar begins the New Year in January and yet people mark their own birthdays as a mini New Year’s celebrations because they are celebrating a new year of their life. Therefore Rosh Hashanah is seen as the “anniversary of the creation of the world, marking our shared humanity with other peoples;
Pesach is the birthday of the people Israel, symbolizing our special destiny as Jews.” (Etz Chayim 381) As we mark a year in this pandemic, let us all work hard to continue to do our parts to fight off this plague, this virus, so we can truly experience freedom like our ancestors. The freedom to be together, to take a walk, to go to somebody’s house, and perhaps when it is safe even to go to shul in person.
