There is an incredibly tense moment in our Torah portion. A group of women, B’not Tslophechad, have lost their father and have no brothers. They appeal to Moses to inherit their father’s land. Moses didn’t know what answer to give them on the spot. No one had the chutspa to even ask that question. It would have occured to women in the generation before. He appeals to God who answers: “The plea of Zelophehad’s daughters is just: you should give them a hereditary holding among their father’s kinsmen; transfer their father’s share to them. Moses, who has spent a great deal of time adjudicating realizes that the case before him is beyond his expertise. What impresses me about Moses’ actions as that he does not dig his heels in and automatically say no to a circumstance that he has never come across. He seeks outside resources to understand and unknown better.
Moses could have ruled in favor of denying them rights because he was uncomfortable with change. Instead, in a moment of uncertainty, he asked for counsel. Many of us don’t want to look like we don’t have all the answers so we give half-baked knee-jerk answers. Alice Walker puts it best when she says: "People do not wish to appear foolish; to avoid the appearance of foolishness, they are willing to remain actually fools."
This Shabbas, let’s reflect on moments when we have jumped to conclusions and action out of fear and uncertainty and ask ourselves where we can ask for outside help.
Shabbat shalom, Rabbi Bernstein
