The Torah tells us this Shabbat, that man cannot live by bread alone. We know this intuitively yet sometimes we forget those other essential elements to life and we forget to make time for them. This verse seems to perfectly pave the way for Yom Kippur. Because Yom Kippur requires self denial, the lack of bread and other bodily pleasures, we are confronted with an awareness that life goes on without me obsessing over my next meal.
I find that this verse also goes hand-in-hand with Passover. By the end of Passover, I feel a sense of space in my habits. I don’t feel so attached to those products which I was able to eliminate for eight days. These holidays remind me that sometimes the invisible, that which has no substance is what keeps us most satiated: Love, belonging, ideas, hope, purpose… These intangibles are also essential for life. May we hold these dear every day and not just on the sacred days.
Shabbat shalom, Rabbi Bernstein
